SUMMARY:Keynote: Restoring Optimism – Pathways to Progress
DESCRIPTION:In a remarkable twist of history\, November 6\, 2024 brought dual waves of political transformation: As Germans woke to news of leadership changes in America\, they would end their day learning of dramatic shifts in their own government. These parallel transitions underscore a pivotal moment in transatlantic relations. The younger generation\, in particular\, may feel like spectators in decisions that will shape their future. But perhaps we’re looking at this through the wrong lens. The moment calls not for anxiety\, but for bold vision. Today’s university graduates aren’t merely inheriting a world of challenges—they’re inheriting unprecedented opportunities to reshape it. Their education\, technological fluency\, and global mindset position them uniquely to transform apparent obstacles into pathways for progress. More to come at the opening of the German American Conference next Friday. \nSPEAKERS: \n\nNicolai Andersen: Global Strategy\, Risk & Transactions Leader\, Deloitte

SUMMARY:Exclusive Tour at the Harvard Art Museum
DESCRIPTION:Discover an array of artworks that transcend borders and spotlight the complexities of modern German identity on a private tour with the curator of the museum\, Dr. Lynette Roth!  \nMade in Germany? Art and Identity in a Global Nation takes an unprecedented look at German art since 1980. Featuring artists from different generations and diverse backgrounds\, the exhibition complicates notions of German identity\, especially the idea of ethnic and cultural homogeneity. In fact\, the country is second only to the United States as a destination for immigrants from around the world. The exhibition offers a range of reflections on German national identity\, which was shaped by labor migration following World War II\, the unification of East and West Germany in 1990\, and the influx of asylum seekers to the country since 2015. As the pointedly interrogative title suggests\, Made in Germany? asks\, rather than offers ready answers to\, the question of who or what represents Germany today. \n  \nSign up will be announced via our newsletter the week before the conference – stay tuned!

SUMMARY:Workshop: Having Better Policy Conversations About AI
DESCRIPTION:The rise of generative AI poses complex challenges that demand multi-disciplinary expertise from policy makers. However\, discussions about AI can become fragmented and unproductive\, with technical experts and policy makers seemingly speaking different languages and failing to cooperate effectively. This workshop aims to help bridge this divide. \nWe will start the workshop with a conceptual introduction to different types of AI systems\, seeking to cut through jargon and focusing on the most policy-relevant features of the systems. We will then explore how these conceptual insights can be used to evaluate AI governance proposals and identify suitable use cases for specific types of AI systems. We will draw on a broad range of examples\, including generative AI in journalism and law\, and participants will be encouraged to apply the insights gained to their own industries and areas of interest. \nThis workshop has been designed to be accessible to participants from all backgrounds and does not assume any coding skills or background in computer science. It will introduce a basic framework for thinking about AI systems more generally but the primary focus will be on generative AI. \nWith Leonie Beyrle \nTicketed participants may register here \n

SUMMARY:Workshop: Innovation in Science
DESCRIPTION:This workshop aims at addressing some of the overlooked areas of innovation in academia. In a rapidly digitalizing world\, it’s easy to assume that the frontier of progress lies solely in integrating digital tools and AI into research. However\, this workshop posits that innovation also lies in reshaping conventional practices and systems. Over a span of 75 minutes\, we will delve deep into non-digital innovation areas that profoundly affect academic productivity and satisfaction. Participants will engage in discussions about transforming mundane meetings\, streamlining bureaucratic processes to fuel creativity\, and improving working conditions to foster a vibrant academic culture. This workshop is not just about identifying problems but also crafting solutions\, with the aim of sparking a paradigm shift that leads to a more efficient and enjoyable academic environment for all. Let’s unlock academia’s full potential\, empowering scholars and institutions to address and resolve the pressing challenges of our era. \nWith Robert Kötter \nTicketed participants may register here

SUMMARY:Panel: Bridging the Divide: How Societal Changes and Structural Disparities Influence Social Cohesion
DESCRIPTION:Societies are in a constant state of change\, often evolving gradually. However\, political\, economic\, and social events can trigger significant shifts in societal dynamics. In recent years\, both Germany and the United States have experienced economic fluctuations\, oscillating between financial crises and rising GDPs. Additionally\, demographic changes\, such as an aging population and increased immigration\, have contributed to growing structural disparities\, including a widening urban-rural divide. These disparities have not only affected economic and social structures but also seem to have influenced moral and political perspectives. Reaching out to one’s neighbor or patriotically supporting one’s nation is no longer taken for granted. In “Bridging the Divide\,” our objective is to explore the question\, “Why are we not getting along anymore?” We aim to examine how societal morals\, values\, and beliefs changed in recent years and how these changes are impacting social cohesion. \nWith Kerstin Kohlenberg and Dominic Ponattu\, moderated by Ilya Marritz

SUMMARY:Panel: Policies for Sustainable Innovation: Between Protectionism and Climate Action
DESCRIPTION:Climate change is present as ever and is one of the saddest tragedies of the commons. Green technologies are an essential tool in combating climate change. Recently\, the U.S. has set strong incentives for more sustainable innovation and consumption through the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). The European Union has established other mechanisms\, such as the European Cap-and-Trade Scheme (ETS) and the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism. It might seem that the IRA gives subsidies\, while Europe taxes. Can we expect business to move to the U.S.? This panel explores the economics and politics of sustainable innovation in Europe and the United States. \nWith Prof. Dr. Clemens Fuest\, Dr. Simon Engelke\, and Prof. Jennifer Hillman\, moderated by Bhavya Jha

SUMMARY:Fireside Chat: War Briefing with Colonel Markus Reisner
DESCRIPTION:Colonel Markus Reisner of the Austrian Armed Forces\, famous for his YouTube battlefield analyses\, will be providing an exclusive briefing on war to the GAC 2023 participants. \nEven better\, the topic will be decided by you\, the participants! Colonel Reisner is prepared to delve into two captivating subjects: \n\nDay 612: The Battle for Ukraine: The current status quo of the war in Ukraine points to a long war of attrition. This affects Ukraine because the Ukrainians are better at mobile warfare than static warfare. The talk analyzes how this came about and how the war has developed so far on the basis of military parameters. The Ukrainian summer offensive began on June 4. It represents an important culmination point in this war. The further course of the war will also depend on its progress.\nFrom Verdun to Star Wars – What the War in Ukraine tells us about the Future of Wars: The end of the 20th century brought a major change in the traditional pattern of conflict that had been familiar until then. Today it seems that wars between states fought by conventional means are increasingly becoming the exception. However\, the beginning of the 21st century brings further developments with it\, the effects of which are much more decisive and the full extent of which cannot yet be assessed. The war in Ukraine is a good example for that development.\n\nThis is your chance as an audience to steer the conversation in the direction that intrigues you the most. \nNo pre-registration required. Simply walk in\, grab a seat\, and be ready to participate in an interactive discussion! Share your insights\, ask burning questions\, and gain valuable knowledge.
