SUMMARY:Fireside Chat: Students as Diplomats? – On the History and Future of Transatlantic Student Exchange
DESCRIPTION:Germany and the United States share some of the oldest and most active student exchange programs in the world. Every year\, tens of thousands of German and American students cross the Atlantic\, many on exchange programs. For more than a hundred years\, these programs have been founded on the hope that memories of Heidelberg or Harvard or Freiburg or Florida would ultimately benefit transatlantic relations. But how important are students really to transatlantic “friendship”?  \nThis session will provide a brief introduction to the stormy history of German-American student exchange and will host a critical discussion on international students as national ‘ambassadors’ abroad. What can – and can’t – student exchange achieve? Should student exchange be influenced by immediate geopolitical concerns (what about exchange with Russia\, for example?)\, and does it even continue to be relevant in a world that is connected in so many other ways? \nWith Elisabeth Piller

SUMMARY:Workshop: Pixels to Progress
DESCRIPTION:In this interactive session\, we will discuss to which extent collaboration on the digital city can lead to improved urban resilience and thus transform pixels into progress. The starting point of this discussion will be an interactive session where participants engage in the “Urban Digitope”\, a serious game developed at the City Science Lab at HafenCity University Hamburg in collaboration with MIT Media Lab. In the game\, players will find themselves in a fictional half-analogue\, half-digital city facing certain shocks to their districts. By taking on different roles\, players will collaboratively decide on how to act and develop Digitopia – dealing with the decisions that were made in previous rounds. \nWith Jan Lüdert\, Hilke Marit Berger\, and Rico Herzog \nTicketed participants may register here

SUMMARY:Panel: Land of the Free? Home of Bureaucracy? Building Transatlantic Environments for Innovation
DESCRIPTION:Fostering digital and green innovation is a salient topic. In this panel\, we are looking at the cultural\, legal and financial framework that enables and drives innovation in the US and Germany. We want to explore what Germany – often known as the home of bureaucracy – can learn from the US\, and what has driven the remarkable American success story in digital technology. In addition\, we seek to discuss which role transatlantic values such as liberty\, equality and free speech play in innovation\, and whether we can leverage these to create a transatlantic technosphere. \nWith Lutz Reimers\, Thomas Koenen\, Thilo Braun\, and Robin Quinville\, moderated by Kirsten Rulf

SUMMARY:Panel: Why haven't we cured cancer?
DESCRIPTION:Tremendous progress has been made in the understanding\, diagnosis\, and treatment of cancer since the first identification of cancerous cells. Still\, about ten million people die from cancer globally every year. Modern biotechnologies such as CRISPR\, as well as novel computer-based approaches like artificial intelligence and the use of Big Data show promising paths to reducing the burden of this disease. Under the question “Why haven’t we cured cancer?”\, we would like to introduce our conference participants to the challenges of curing cancer and to innovative ways of solving these. \nWith Dr. Jens Kleesiek MD PhD\, Dr. Jochen Lennerz MD PhD\, Dr. Mridul Agrawal MD\, and Fiona Mack\, PhD

DESCRIPTION:In a world undergoing rapid technological transformation\, healthcare stands as a field profoundly impacted by innovations such as artificial intelligence (AI)\, genetic engineering\, and biotechnology. The integration of AI in healthcare offers transformative potential\, yet it comes with a unique set of challenges and ethical considerations. Recent biotechnological breakthroughs spanning fields such as genetic engineering\, generative AI\, and drug delivery have enabled unprecedented opportunities for the development of novel therapeutics. \nIn this event\, we want to discuss the promises and the future of medicine and biotechnology. What key technologies will shape the industry’s trajectory? What are the challenges associated with bringing these revolutionary treatments to patients? What role do academia\, biopharmaceutical companies\, and startups play in the innovations in this field? What are the implications for our healthcare systems? All of this will be discussed in the context of transatlantic partnership: what can we learn from each other and how can we work together on both sides of the Atlantic to spark innovation in biotechnology and pharma? \nWith Nikolai Slavov\, Aaron Morris\, Thorsten Wirkes\, and Martina Kerscher\, moderated by Lukas Lange

SUMMARY:Workshop: Why is making progress so hard? An interactive intro to Climate & Negotiations
DESCRIPTION:How can you negotiate successfully in a rigid process where more than 190 governments\, organized in a complex web of formal and informal alliances\, negotiate hundreds of technical and political issues that impact all aspects of how we live? Climate negotiations are complex; and they require a particular set of skills and analytical tools. This session features an interactive negotiation simulation to explore the particular sources of complexity when negotiating the climate and how to navigate this complexity. \nWith Anselm Dannecker\, Archie Young\, and Alice Plane \nTicketed participants may register for the workshop here
