Former President of the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), Professor at the Hasso Plattner Institute (HPI)

Lothar H. Wieler, who served as president of the Robert Koch Institute from 2015 to 2023, is now professor of digital global public health and speaker of the Digital Health Cluster at the Hasso Plattner Institute. He's also a member of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina and part of the COVID-19 Review Committee for the WHO. He's a veterinarian, microbiologist and expert in global public health. His initial research focused on the molecular pathogenesis, genomic surveillance and evolution of infectious agents, particularly zoonotic agents and antibiotic-resistant bacterial pathogens. Based on this experience, he expanded his research into public and global health, focusing on disease prevention and containment of pathogens with epidemic and pandemic potential. He is currently expanding his research into the prevention of non-communicable diseases and conducting research in the field of digital health, with a particular focus on global public health issues. His goal is to reduce health disparities by promoting digital public health at local, national and international levels, with a particular focus on low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).
