Remembrance and Reflections: Navigating Collective Memory in Germany and the U.S.

November 16 @ 2:35 pm - 3:50 pm

Germany and the USA have distinct approaches to Remembrance, influenced by their histories. Germany’s remembrance is centered on the Holocaust and Nazi crimes, promoting collective responsibility and counteracting extremism, while the U.S. focuses on events such as the Civil War and civil rights movements, often highlighting progress and patriotism. In the panel “”Remembering the Past in the Present – A Transatlantic Comparison”” at the German American Conference, we wish to investigate the differences in Remembrance culture and its societal implications in the USA and Germany.

SPEAKERS:

  • Dr. Gloria Ayee: Senior Fellow and Adjunct Lecturer in Public Policy, Harvard Kennedy School
  • Dr. Sonja Kreibich: Consul General of Germany to the New England States
