Gudrun Engel

Washington Bureau Chief, ARD German Television and Radio

Gudrun Engel is the Washington Bureau Chief and Senior Correspondent for ARD German Television and Radio, one of the world’s largest broadcasters and the most watched news organization in Germany. She has worked in a variety of roles during her 15-year tenure, including as editor, reporter, and correspondent covering Europe, the United States, and Africa. She was a fellow of the RIAS Berlin Commission which promotes excellence in journalism and exchanges between U.S. and German journalists. She was also awarded a fellowship at the Heinz-Kuhn Foundation, where she contributed her on-the-ground research from Laos to the foundation’s annual report on development.

She received dual advanced degrees in journalism and political science from the University of Dortmund. Her studies include formal training in broadcast television from the University of Gothenburg in Sweden and multimedia storytelling at the Kaunas University of Technology in Lithuania.

Ms. Engel has received multiple recognitions for her roles in the newsroom and in leadership. In 2018, her in-depth reporting merited formal recognition from ARD’s Tagesthemen, with the Best Reportage Award.
